Community Violence Intervention Program (CVIP)
What is CVIP?
Community Violence Intervention Programs (CVIP) offer an innovative public health approach to prevent community violence, such as gun violence and stabbings. This program uses evidence-based methods to address the root causes of violence and provide support to individuals most at risk. These efforts are proven to reduce a survivor’s risk of revictimization or becoming a perpetrator themselves, thus breaking cycles of violence and fostering safer and healthier communities.
Why have a CVIP program at Volare?
Volare has a medical-legal partnership with the CVIP program at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, which allows for a trauma-informed warm referral of survivors to crime victims’ rights legal services at Volare. The success of this partnership is rooted in the similar goals of both Volare and CVIP to empower survivors and create healing ecosystems through community connections and access to justice.
How is this different from other service methods for survivors?
CVIP is different from other service methods for survivors because it exclusively works with individuals who are receiving treatment for life-threatening intentional injuries at one of the busiest trauma centers in the region, MedStar Washington Hospital Center. While in the hospital, CVIP staff take an individualized approach to meet each survivor’s needs.
Volare’s partnership with CVIP is different than some of our other services methods because our attorneys attend CVIP’s case conferences at the hospital, visit survivors bedside during recovery to connect and offer services, and works hand-in-hand with the CVIP team at Medstar to ensure that survivors receive the care and resources they need.
Who is benefitted by projects like CVIP?
Projects like CVIP benefit survivors who are most at risk of experiencing or committing an act of community violence. Breaking cycles of violence has ripple effects fostering healthier and safer communities.
Who can access help from CVIP?
Survivors who are admitted to MedStar for treatment of life-threatening intentional injuries are screened by CVIP staff for eligibility. Once enrolled, CVIP staff provide advocacy, therapy, and case management services to survivors enrolled in the program, and Volare provides crime victims’ legal advice and a gateway to other legal services.
How does Volare help?
Volare attorneys are able to provide bedside brief advice on crime victims’ rights to survivors in the hospital. By providing education about their rights early in the process, survivors are more prepared for interactions with law enforcement, navigation of the criminal legal system as a victim of crime, and define what justice and healing looks like for themselves.
